What is criminal profiling?

Criminal profiling is the process of identifying the characteristics of an offender by means of logic and statistics. Specialists called profilers can help investigators discover clues and leads that wouldn't have been taken into account otherwise. To determine the type of person that committed the crime, profilers use a five-step process which includes victimology, location, crime scene, organization level and pre/post behavior. Victimology is the study of the victim and it can lead to the reason why the offender picked a certain person. The location of the crime, says a lot about what kind of person is the criminal. The crime scene shows a person's behavior, for example the type of weapon used may hint at the profession of the killer. The organization level of the offender shows some character of the criminal and their experience with criminal activity, it can be observed by the planning of actions and thorough cover up. The behavior of a person before and after a crime is directed by their character, so an organized criminal will most likely stalk their victims to gather information about them and a disorganized person will commonly leave the close area of the murder for a couple of months. By applying logic and statistics to these factors, criminal profilers, can gather a lot of information about offenders and help police catch criminals responsible for crimes.

  1. Profilers abound in crime TV series but there's a lot of skepticism concerning the validity of their theories. I wonder if there are any stats showing the effectiveness of profiling in crime detection.
