A collapsing bridge kills 135 people in India
A poorly kept up suspension bridge in Morbi, India has collapsed taking 135 lives. The estimated number of people that have been on the bridge during this catastrophe is 200. The cause of this tragedy appears to be a snapped cable. An electrical manufacturing company tasked with maintaining this structure is suspected to be at fault because the bridge was only reopened a week ago after six month long repairs. Many people have gathered on the shores of Machchhu river to pay tribute to the bridges victims.
It is terribly sad to hear about such a tragedy, but accidents like this happen on a smaller scale almost everyday. I wonder how will this electrical manufacturing company be punished because they are indirectly responsible for the deaths of these people. At least it is nice to see that the government of India reacted well and is helping the families of victims with money compensation but also emotionally with the prime minister visiting hospitals. Even international governments are sending their condolences.
